Different seat types in office ergonomic chairs

October 27th, 2008

John was exiting the building of the UCLA of testing carrying his Mild Task Back Ergonomic chair. As John exited the building you noticed that his hair was smoking and standing on his head you also noticed that he walked slow with a slight limp and had a nervous tick where he would twitch his eye and squeal. As John got closer and closer to his car his wife Margret who was waiting for him got out of the car and began frantically asking him what happen. John began to rehash the events of the day.

Well, Margret it all started when I found that ad in this morning’s newspaper regarding a clinical trial at the University of Anywhere, Department of testing. The ad read: “UCLA is seeking volunteers to participate in back pain study. Eligible participants must (a) be 19-60 years of age; (b) experience back pain at least three times a week for the past three months; (c) have no history of spinal disease. You will be compensated with a brand new custom ergonomic chair worth $900 for your time. All studies are conducted at no cost to participants. To find out more about this study or to get involved, call the Division of Preventive Medicine at (404) 123-4567”. So, after reading the ad it clicked I can get a free custom chair with a seat comfortable enough to accommodate my back problems as well as my hemorrhoid flare ups. I called made the appointment and we prepared to go to the testing facility.

Immediately, after walking into the building I was approached by two doctors. They took me to chair heaven. It was a huge room with a vast array of ergonomic chairs. The chairs varied significantly in color, shape, design, and material. Margret, the chairs have different seat types that are designed to mold themselves to the physical contours of the users, and an ergonomic chair for your office seat type will have an adjustable back and armrests, along with memory foam cushioning to allow your weight to be distributed evenly so that you can sit all day and avoid developing back pain. Some seat types vary from slightly contoured to those that can move forward or backward, like car seats, to accommodate different leg lengths. So, I began to walk around the room testing a variety of ergonomic chairs, and I find the one chair I did not want to leave without. It was the Mild Task Back ergonomic chair. The shoulder high adjustable back rest and a stretch seat accommodated my above average height. It fit my body like a glove. It felt so good once I sat in it I forgot about my hemorrhoids that was bothering me. I felt no pain. I had to have it. While, I was still marveling in the chair the doctors approached me they explained to me that I had to sign some consent forms giving them permission to perform the test and releasing them of any injuries that I may incur. Margret, after reading that statement I should have ran but that chair was so comfortable and don’t forget free, so I signed the papers and the study began.

The doctors walked me into a brightly lit room with six other study subjects sitting in their own custom ergonomic chairs in the middle of the room. As I looked around I saw the chair that I chose next to one of the study subjects waiting for me to sit in it. I sat in the chair and a nurse hooked me up to three different machines. The doctor announced that the test is going to take one hour. There will be a series of electric shocks sent from the machine to different parts of your body it will start out mild and every 15 minutes the power will increase. If at any time you tell us to stop or you do not want to continue the test you do not keep the chair.

The timer was set and I began to feel the shocks going through my body. It was a piece of cake Margret. It felt like someone pinching me on my arm, leg and head. Then, the power went up. It was a little more intense. It felt like someone was poking me with a needle. Then, the power went up again and I began to question if the chair was really worth it. It felt like someone hit me with a shovel. All of a sudden they announced that this is the final increase and it will be extremely powerful. Margret at that point everyone started to run, but I stayed because it was the last surge and I figured how bad could it be. The nurses that were in the room with us began putting on protective gear and took out two big fire extinguishers and they looked at the doctor to give them the queue that they were ready. They turned around to me and asked if I was ready and I hesitantly nodded my head. Then they pulled the lever. Margret I don’t know what an electric chair feels like but I think this was the closest thing to it. As, far as the nervous tick the doctor says that will wear off in a couple of days.
